NaNoWriMo 2017 :: Day 6/30 :: 11,125 words [extra special second update!]

06 November 2017

After my last update, I took a bunch of anti-anxiety meds and played games for a bit.

And I thought about my problems.

Not too deeply, and not too emotionally. Just to consider the situation.

I reached a few conclusions:

  1. I do want to make a career as a writer.
  2. Making a career out of something means doing it even when you don’t feel like it.
  3. My problems stem from not having enough money.
  4. Selling novels would be a nice little income.
  5. …so getting some word count down and finishing this novel is way more likely to solve my problems than playing video games and ignoring them.

So… word count!

After yanking myself out of that funk, I mashed the keyboard and got myself up to 11,125 words!

11,125 words written

It’s 518 words below my target for today, but I’m still generally tracking over-target.

518 words below target

And here’s something I haven’t shared yet!

Here’s a graph plotting my actual words (in green) against a steady cadence tracking up to 50,000 words by the end of the month (in red):

Tracking above goals

When the green line is above the red line, I’m over-target and heading towards hitting 50,000 words early. When the green line is below the red line, I’m on a path to failing NaNoWriMo and need to catch up with extra words.

Anyway: I’m currently over the line, so I’m doing okay!

Thinking about publishing

This isn’t really big news, but I wanted to mark it in my journal because it made me feel awesome!

I went out for coffee with the guy who I’m deeply hoping will be interested and available to edit this novel before I publish. He’s written a ton of science-fiction and fantasy, and he’s on my wavelength, so he’d pretty much be ideal.

Anyway, I took my iPad, and showed him the blurb I wrote back in Preptober.

And he laughed.

The good kind of laugh!

If the stars don’t align and he isn’t available to edit it when I’m done, at least I think I’ve found a reader.

The plan for tomorrow

I’m back at my day-job tomorrow – and it’s my first day there for a while – so I’m anticipating arriving home exhausted and treading water at best.

Let’s see how it goes!
