March 2018 writing retrospective and goals for April

It’s the last day of March, so let’s take stock of where I’m at!

March retrospective

Hiatus

Ah… yeah, right. Not a whole lot got done in March.

But I don’t think I regret it. I came back feeling stronger, better-prepared, and creatively wealthier.

Let’s just not make a habit of dropping out, okay?

New writing hardware

I’m still lamenting the loss of Sunday as an all-day writing day, but this new iPad Pro I picked up is really helping with writing here-and-there in the spare moments I find.

I can’t tell you how much I love writing on this thing. The keyboard is lovely, the hardware keeps up, and it’s just way less distracting than a full-on laptop.

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned here, it’s to embrace your writing style. If you prefer paper to anything digital, go for it. If you don’t like the writing apps that everyone else is raving about, go with what works for you. It’s more important that you write, than how you do it.

Any writing progress at all?

My focus since I got back from hiatus was to plan and outline Esthree Postbuild and the Agency of Dragons and Stars and Things.

I started the story in November last year, and since then it’s been pushed and pulled in all kinds of directions. At first thought it doesn’t feel like much progress has been made, but I have got 6,136 words out so far in March — so that’s kinda awesome!

I can feel the story coming together. I just need to carry on getting my head down and doing the work.

April goals

Goal #1: Sci-Fi London 48-Hour Flash Fiction Challenge

I’ll be taking part in the Sci-Fi London 48-Hour Flash Fiction Challenge next weekend.

I’ve played along for a couple of years now, and for some reason it totally slipped my mind this year. I’m indebted to Céline Terranova for mentioning this year’s sign-up form on Twitter!

My goal here is just to get a story finished and submitted.

Goal #2: Finish the one-sheet summary of “Esthree Postbuild and the Agency of Dragons and Stars and Things”

Right now, I’m working on a one-sheet top-to-bottom summary of the entire story. I’m not caring about scenes or chapters yet; I’m just telling the story to myself, and working through the characters’ goals, motivations and conflicts.

I reckon I’m about half-way through that already, so wrapping it up by the end of next month seems very do-able.

Roll on, April!

Good luck to everyone else setting goals for April! Remember: 2018 is the year you’re going to make it happen!
