Week 8/13: 61,608 words (and thinking about NaNoWriMo 2018)

26 August 2018

I’m still on-schedule according to the 13-week plan!

I needed to get at least 5,000 words into Beat #6, and I’m 7,789 in – and 61,608 in total. I’ve breached the three-quarters mark!

I really, really hope I can keep this up.

Writing desk!

I mentioned last week that I had a writing desk arriving from IKEA.

Well, here’s the corner of my living room last Sunday…

I lived in a mess

…and here’s my fantastic new desk!

Oh my stars, it’s wonderful to be able to sit down to write.

OH. MY. STARS.

I don’t think I could’ve written this much today if I’d been stuck back on the sofa or on the bed. Just sitting, with a real chair, is… well, it still feels like a luxury. Damn, I love it.

Now then, NaNoWriMo…

I hadn’t grokked how close we are to NaNoWriMo until I started receiving Rachael Stephen’s Prep_tober emails.

And now, it’s on my mind.

According to my current plan, I’ll have the first 80,000-word draft of Esthree Postbuild and the Agency of Dragons and Stars and Things done by the end of September.

If – if – I hit that goal, then I reckon I’ll let that first draft sit for a couple of months, while I do Preptober and NaNoWriMo for the second book in the series, tentatively titled Esthree Postbuild and the V.O.I.D.

And if I don’t finish that first draft by the end of September, then I’ll skip NaNoWriMo and focus on finishing what I’ve started.

That’s my plan.

But… why?

I’ve been doing NaNoWriMo for a few years now, and I’ve never completed it.

But, every year, I get a little bit closer. Every year, I’m a little bit better. Every year, my strategy is more refined, my planning is more complete, and my words-per-hour is greater.

So, if – if – I take part, I’ll be playing to beat my last highscore and measure my improvements. Winning would be lovely, but it’s more of a benchmark than anything else.

What about you? Are you taking part in NaNoWriMo this year? Are you preparing yet?
